The IronWino Wine Challenge
June 11, 2000 Cellar Stadium, Pasadena, CA

This is a parody and spoof of the Iron Chef television show, it is intended as humor. We have the utmost respect and appreciation of this show and honor it with the following parady.

Upon the dawning of the new millennium, one man’s fantasy became a reality with the opening of Cellar Stadium. His motive was to bring together the greatest wine talent and reveal the intrigues of wine. To realize his dreams, he started choosing the top wine masters, whom he named the “Iron Winos”. To fulfill his desire for oenophilic enlightenment, he summons the Iron Winos to engage worthy competitors in competitions of epic proportion.

Cellar Stadium is the arena where the Iron Winos await the challenge of leading wine experts from around the world. In this battle for the ultimate honor, competitors must utilize all their senses and intellectual capacity to identify wines served blind. And if ever a challenger wins over the Iron Wino, he or she will gain the people’s ovation and fame forever.

In the inaugural Iron Wino competition, Chairman Harrington welcomes to Cellar Stadium the West Coast’s own rocket scientist of renown, Dr. Bernard Roth.

Dr. Roth cut his teeth on fine wines during a year’s sojourn in Cambridge, England, at which time he learned the finer nuances of sherry, claret and port wines. During the 1980’s, as a graduate student in Austin, Texas, he expanded his wine horizons into the eclectic world of Alsatian and German Rieslings, Rioja, California Cabernet and Pinot Noir, Burgundies and Shiner Bock. Upon his arrival in California in 1989, he refined his palate and discovered the wonders of Rhone varietals.

Dr. Roth has issued a challenge to WCWN’s only double Iron Wino, the master of Rhones and Zinfandels, Dr. Tom Hill. For this challenge, Chairman Harrington has chosen three flights with three themes, playing to each competitor’s strengths. One flight will be pinot noirs, one will be Rhone reds, and in the final flight, anything goes.

What inspiration will the challenger bring and how will the Iron Wino fight back? The heat will be on!

The competition will be held in Pasadena on Sunday evening, June 11, the weekend before Hospice du Rhone. The Chairman has reserved several judges slots at the taste challenge for WCWN participants. Each judge will be required to bring one bagged bottle of wine in either the pinot noir or Rhone Red category. Judges will receive pours of all wines and will help score the performances of the Iron Wino and the challenger. Dinner will be provided at a reasonable cost to attendees. If you are interested in participating, attendance will be awarded on a first come basis. Just contact the Chairman via the email link below for additional details and to reserve your spot.
