Pretty common with wine with different importers.

I'd say the others are probably right when they guess the winery ran out of labels and capsules and had to re-order; perhaps from a different vendor.

We got a bunch of Rioja in a month or two ago (forget the producer) and half of the capsules were solid while the other half had a gold band around the bottom.]]>

I “kind of” understood that this was the kickoff show about another house and another architect. I get that..

What I was a bit uncomfortable with was the constant compliment of detailing without recognition that it was “architect” designed. My name was not important, but the fact that it was architect designed was to me. “The Millworker built a nice nautical railing,” “The owner wanted the cherry panels to represent a yacht club,” etc… were all really made up and in fact the architects design concepts. The “builder wasn’t even hired when those decisions were made. I found this a touch offensive. The builder said he was pressured to mention nothing of me or the owner. I do like the builder, so beyond some serious teasing, I will not make a big deal of it.
 Thanks all!]]>

simple...because it doesn't have a strong enough character of its own when grown on cool sites.

Grow it in a warm area and everyone complains that it is 'syrah'. Perhaps the character of the grape is truly expressed in those 'easy to ripen' areas.

But the all knowing reviewers/geeks/msg board know it alls like it better when its 'real' character is somewhat muted, yielding instead to what some refer to as 'terrior'.

Just a guess.

BevMo has it's uses, but by and large they carry mostly the largest labels with the least cachet.

What makes them worthwhile is their 5 cent sale for daily drinkers and cooking wine. We have found a small handful of decent deals for everyday whites. Low end Drouhin White Burgs that normally sell for $20, add a second for 5 cents and now you are drinking entry level burg for $10. We found some tasty torrontes for $12 a bottle plus the extra for 5 cents.

They tend to have a decent beer selection but once again, very little that is low production or hard to find.

Hard liquor is limited but they have some good stuff. They have the best selection of Italian syrups I have come across locally.]]>

He was a very special guy to many of us. Sometimes, when I'd say something stupid (it does happen), he'd give me a whole raft of $hit about it...but you knew from the twinkle in his eye he didn't mean it.
ChristopherWatkins (Ridge MB tasting room manager) but up a very nice note "By Donn's Early Light" yesterday on his blog:

Very good, professional report as usual. I sometimes take extensive notes and photos on my wine trips, but lack the skills to put them together.

Couldn't agree more on Cedarville. I met Jonathan and Susan early on and buy something from them every year. Luckily, this time I bought the 09 syrah;it sounds good. Prices are extremely fair.

I'm also an NHL fan and somewhat root for the Sharks. I was in S Jose when they were playing the Blackhawks in the 09 playoffs and it was a huge deal. We don't get the Sharks tv in Vegas, but we get both the Kings and Ducks, so the Sharks are on a fair amount.]]>

As usual, well-written. I thought it was an even-handed treatment of the vitriol that is oftentimes displayed by both sides of the issue. Maybe a bit superficial because of its brevity; but balanced and non-judgemental.
But I am shocked...absolutely shocked...that he didn't mention sweet Alice. Heads are gonna roll at the NYTimes upper level because of the (presumed intentional) omission. Or...gasp...maybe Eric doesn't think Alice has anything important to contribute to the discussion.
Wow...those prices are a shame. And you didn't even list the "29" Cabernet. If they're that much, then I guess I won't be buying. From what I remember about tasting the 29 in the past, the "Cru" wine seemed to be true enough to the house style. And by that I mean, I recall that roasted coffee character to the wine and the Cru had that in spades. C'est la vie. Move on to the next!
J
I tasted both the 29 and Aida, and remember preferring that profile in spite of the cost difference... for me.. i did a quick search and Adia is going for about $150-175 and Estate is about $200+ on the secondary market. The cru had a wonderful taste profile, I agree... just not as intense as I would have hoped for that money. Again though, we weren't tasting the same vintage! I might completely agree with you.

At the end of the day I am happy that people can charge what ever they want and still make money... I am happier when they choose not to. peace]]>

1988 Lynch Bages and Pichon Baron

1961 Gruaud larose

1961 Grand Puy Lacoste

1985 and 1986 Chave Hermitage

1961 Ch. Latour (probably my wine of the year!)

1977 Grange Hermitage

1998 Vieux Telegraphe

1970 Montrose (much better than the 1970 Cheval Blanc we also had)

1986 Mouton

1978 Quinta do Noval Nacional

1982 Cheval Blanc

1963 Dow Port

I enjoy these annual threads, as they make me look back over the past year and I am always impressed with how darned lucky I've been to taste some of the wines that have crossed my path!]]>

Just top-of-mind, in addition to some Sancerre:
--Brocard's various Chablis (most are unoaked).
--Ch.St.Michelle Eroica Riesling or Hermann Wiemer Finger Lakes Riesling
--a number of Casablanca or Leyda Valley Sauvignon Blancs
--a number of Rias Baixas Albarinos
--Marc Olivier's various Muscadets
--some of the Manseng-heavy Cotes de Gascognes

If you consider wines matured in neutral old, large casks "no oak", that opens up a bunch of very good German and Alsatian whites and Bandol or Piemontese reds.

I like the Faury wines, generally prefer the Saint Joseph (regular and VV) to the Cote Rotie. Not sure, but I have the impression there is a bit more new oak on the CR. I think that Hermitage also has a number of producers who are no longer making wines like 20 years ago.
