Just an update - I am now on the Board of Directors of the Rhone Rangers are we are taking the problem on as we speak.

We're working on something very cool for November, something the likes of Zaca Mesa, Qupe, Arnot-Roberts, and many others have signed on for.

I will keep you all posted - but above all, don't lose faith in the potential for domestic syrahs . . . I know I haven't!

			Bob,

The Marines who fought on Iwo Jima, when they returned home after the war to their families, would never, ever talk about their experiences on that island, unless it was to another Marine who had been there. Why? It was because the fighting on Iwo was so fierce and intense, the trauma kept them from discussing it outside of those that had experienced it. They had peered into the belly of the beast, into their own heart and souls, and had seen the monster that lay within themselves, and within the enemy, that could be unleashed under the right circumstances, a monster that could not be reconciled with the civilized world that they had come from.

I mention this because it is the best comparison I can come up with to describe the horrors I experienced in the retail wine world. The situation you describe is just typical of what goes on in that world. All the wines in that (locked) cooler were the ones that sell for $100 or more. Can you imagine a warehouse that is not temperature controlled d]]>

'In all the world the like abundance is not to be found,' two of Sir Walter Raleigh's explorers wrote from Roanoke Island in 1584. The island's grapes helped sustain Raleigh's settlers before the 1587 Lost Colony mysteriously disappeared forever." Makes you wonder if perhaps scuppernog might have contributed to their disappearance.
A little known factoid almost as mysterious as the Lost Colony itself was a cryptic note found near the fort on Roanoke Island: "....cloudy/not clean; lacks acids/poor acidification control lacking balance with overly sweetish/Christmas pudding cloying thou tongue and cheeks with foxy/sauvage/musty/post-muskrat love finisheth reminiscent of south side of porcine breaking wind (Manchester colloquialism) while enjoying boiled cabbage and oyst]]>

I think this will be a late one. There's talk of powdery mildew showing up in many vineyards. I've found some this past week. Some stuff is starting to have cluster closure and canopy is pretty heavy in lots of fields. We're just starting to water a couple of the weaker areas just now, which shows the type of year its been.

Grenache has shattered pretty bad as has Cab. Zin crop looks normal with loose, long clusters. Pet looks tight as always but shorter than normal. Typical hens & chicks in Sangio that won't need thinning. Counoise clusters are big and berries are very small still. We'll have to drop lots to make it.

Starting to hear from many customers about how things look. Its like everyone woke up this past week and had the same thought.

I had a week off and went to Seattle to see my new grandson. Sure was nice to get off the ranch for a spell.]]>

And then I spied the author's name...our sweet AliceF***ing. Against my better judgement, I decided to read it anyway.
Surprise/surprise.... it's actually a rather good article. Not one mention of Parker anywhere (thought sure she'd offer up some kind of conspiracy theory that Parker was behind the mealybug pest). None of the usual/self-indulgent/whiney tone that characterizes her previous writings. None of the polemics against alcohol & oak or in favor of "natural" wines. It's sort of a "stealth" article in support of organic & biodynamic growing, but totally free of her strident/preachy character.
Maybe not a really profound article...but reasonably informative and straightforward. I learned something from it.
   Good job, Alice.

In general, I tend to agree with your observation. (Though if you had tasted a 10yo Rochioli West Block we opened last year you'd be surprised at how quickly it fell apart.)

Some of them, mainly the Cabs, I just don't like any more. Almost completely lost my taste for most Cabernets. I AM keeping the Monte Bellos and some others.

The real problem is that I have other wines in the cellar I like almost as much as these I'm pretty sure have no auction value. Therefore it's a choice. Keep them all and let the ones I would not auction go over the hill or sell the ones I can get some $$ for. I'm just not real crazy about how some of the listed wines and the others that I'm keeping age. I prefer the Carlisles almost right out of the shipper.

I have about 8-9 cases of Carlisles and anything that made the auction list were only ones I had more than a bottle of.

Also, we opened a Paloma Syrah a couple weeks ago and decided it was nothing special and if they had some value, get rid of them.

Nice winery. Worth the drive up Howell Mtn which isn't that far. It's by appointment and $10 to taste which is the norm for Napa. Good wines I especially liked the SB. I think it's owned by Plumpjack. I would recommend a visit.]]>

Nothing terribly profound or earth-shattering, but nicely done.

			Napa vs. Sonoma

That's been my experience. The former treats you as a meal ticket, the latter, like family. Dry Creek Vyd, Simi, Arrowood, Ferrari-Carano, it didn't matter where we were. The only Napa exception of the trip was Frank Family who were amazing. All the rest were so so with one (Frog's Leap) being complete asses.

We get a mixed case from them twice a year. Just outstanding quality from top to bottom.

It's one of those wineries you hope gets the recognition it is due; yet you're thrilled to be able to buy from them at under-the-radar prices.

And yes, their guest house is a fantastic place to spend the week if you're visiting Paso Robles. ]]>

[quote=TomHill][quote=JFO]I think it's a total crap shoot. I've had $8 wines that lasted way longer than 2 or 4 days, and more expensive wines that were bad on day 2.

I will say that I think older wines never last like that. In my experience, it's always been a younger wine.
When I was in CA in 2008, Arrowood was pouring their Monte Rosso Cabernet from a bottle that had been opened a week before. It was delicious. I've also seen where Giacosa tastes people on his Barolo when it's been open for weeks.
I once had a bottle of Rosemount Diamond Shiraz that I forgot about on the kitchen counter for a week. Before I poured it down the drain I figured I'd taste it. It was awesome. I was shocked.
So i've not noticed any pattern at all other than the young v. old scenario.

+2; it's a complete crap shoot. I have only rarely opened a bottle intending to leave it more than the next day, but occasionally leftovers do sit around. Results very similar to]]>

See what BD does? You chant over pumpkin seeds and end up with an artichoke plantation! ;) ]]>

This isn't unlike the BD controversy. I didn't read Dave's column, so it's tough to tell if he's merely trying to counter the current impetus of natural wine, or tilting at windmills, or just looking for recognition in the on-going battle of verbiage. Either way, the "healthy" discussion is both valid and useful to some, if an irritant to others. Maybe the outfall will be a greater recognition of EVERYTHING that goes into winemaking, and a reevaluation of current methods - whatever they may be. ]]>
