So, while attending an event last weekend, an acquaintance comes up and askes me to recommend some Portuguese wines to him. Not Port, mind you, but Portuguese table wine. Of course, I know nothing about Portuguese wines (other than a little about Port, which I don't care for).

So for those of you who like and know something about Portuguese table wine, what do you recommend (both red and white)? (Andreozzi, you follow the western Iberian coast don't you?)

Broadbent Vino Verde. A light fruity slightly frizzante low alcohol, crisp white is a frequent visitor to our table. Can be had at BEVMO for less than $10.

Agree. A terrific VV.

One that I am familiar with is Quinta Vale D. Maria.
They do make port but they make a still version that is outstanding.

They have a regular and reserve bottling that I have seen around in California. I've only had the reserve and wish I had a ton more. Absolutely love it.

I love Portuguese wines, red and white. The Vinho Verdes are excellent, fun, simple summer wines, but there is a growing niche of higher end VVs that are year round table wines, crisp, clean, fruity, good food wines. Sogrape's "Duque de Viseu" Vinho Verde is one I like a lot. Any wine labeled "Alvarinho" is also a high end white from just across the river from Spain's Rias Baixas region and uses the same grape, Albarino in Spanish.

Reds from Dao and Alentejo are nice everyday wines for food. The reds from Douro tend to be oaky and big and expensive, Parker style wines, although there are always exceptions.

The best thing to do is just go grab a few of this and that and check them out. The Grao Vasco White Dao is always a nice bargain.

Quinta de Cabriz Dao Reserva has been complex and delicious and good value even at $20 in several vintages.

Charamba Douro red is nicely balanced and flavorful at only $7 to $9 a bottle.

2004 Barraida white from Compolargo was intriguing, leafy floral dry white wine.

Lucky for me, The Spanish Table is here in town and they have lots of portugese wine - I want to say they have more than 100 different ones but I haven't counted. They might have 200!I enjoy portugese wine (best reading Moby Dick on the beach in the Algarve drinking Dao at lunchtime or drinking Dao in blooming almond groves in the afternoon!) but most of the ones I've tried were more about potential. I think there could be an awful lot of great wine from there someday. This reminds me I ought to walk over there and get some wine soon.

Thanks
Fraser
