A very interesting article in GrapeCollective, as linked by WineTerroirist:
Rotgipfler/Zierfandler
on the resurging interest in the ThermenRegion in Rotgipfler & Zierfandler. It focuses on the Stadlmann family, one of the best producers in the region.
When I was first getting interested in Austrian wines, Gumpoldskirchen was pretty much THE Austrian wine, though I never recall that went beyond mere "pleasant". When the area South of Vienna was folded into the ThermenRegion, it pretty much vanished from view. This is an area that can make some very good wines in Austria, but seems to be largely overlooked in favor of the Wachau/Kamptal.
I've tried some 20-30 different Rotgipfler & Zierfandler wines. I've yet to find any as compelling as the Riesling/Gruners, though. But I keep looking.
