Berteletti Ghemme 1964
Azienda Agricola Castello di Lozzolo

13% 720 ml

Freaky for sure.

"Very poignant & intense rose nose. Unbelievably intense palate. Very rich. Too intense? Rose nose. Very smooth and balanced and too intense? Just a little? Deep nose, palate. Incredibly young. So striking. Tiny bit oxidized. Edgy. Textured. Unbalanced? Striking for sure. Lusty wine, probably will live forever."

On the first sip, my wife said, "This is too much". I agree. Don't think I've ever had a wine like this and not sure what to attribute it to. Is this how over-ripe Ghemme tastes. Late harvest? Over-extracted or a combination of the two? Somewhat syrupy and liqour-like. A little like an Ascheri Farina Barolo 1985 that was a complete tar bomb. Didn't even taste like wine. Wonder if this was blended with Vespolina or Uva Rara, as allowed or 100% Nebbiolo?

What a drink! My last 1960's Berteletti - one of my best wine deals - they have all been drinking quite well. Not one dud.

Had this with one of Marcela Hazan's Beef recipe - added some morels and it was great

Thanks
Fraser
