TN: Two New Solminer GrunerVeltliners '19...(short/boring) - 10-18-2020 08:45:45

Tried these ystrday afternon:
1. Solminer GrunerVeltliner SpearVnyd/SantaRitaHills (13.8%; Buellton 2019: color; quiet spicy/white pepper/GV light earthy low-key/attractive nose; fairly tart some GV/white pepper/spicy/floral light earthy/chalky pleasant flavor; long lightly tart quiet GV/floral/white pepper/spicy light earthy/chalky finish; speaks strongly of GV but w/ a quiet/gentle voice; a pleasant GV but just that; would like a bit more intensity; of the level of the Huber low-end GVs. $34.00
2. Solminer GrunerVeltliner Curarse La Cruda Skin-Frmtd deLandaVnyd/LosOlivosDist (11.6%; #626 of 2626 btls) 2019: Light gold/bronze cloudy color; strong VinoMacerati/phenolic/quite resiny bit graham cracker/honeycomb some complex rather interesting nose; fairly tart strong resiny/phenolic/VM bit graham cracker/honeycomb some earthy flavor w/ light tannic bite; very long VM/phenolic/quite resiny some graham cracker/honey grahams light earthy finish; pretty much dominated by the phenolic character and no obvious GV varietal character. $34.00
A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. Solminer is the wnry in LosOlivos of David & Anna deLaski that specializes in Austrian-style wines. The wines don't often have the intensity of high-end Austrian counterparts but a generally attractive & well-made.
Like many young such wines, the skin-contact (Vini Macerati as BobbyStuckey calls them) GV is dominated by the phenolic character at the expense of varietal character. They are not very much fun to drink young. It is only after some age that the really start to become interesting. This VM GV is not very much fun to taste right now. But I suspect it will develop into a very interesting wine w/ age. Or maybe not.
