Cigliuti Barbaresco Serraboella 2005

14.5% Imported by David Vincent Selection, NY

Decanted a few hours.

"Extremely perfumed when opened. A little modern, young, smooth, balanced. Licorice on the nose. Cool, menthol-y, integrated. Very poignant nose. High quality, oak and cinnamon. Striking, a little much. Very fresh and somewhat unresolved. More modern aromas and taste, a little international and less typical. Well done. Moving into rose bomb country, very smooth, very fresh, very international, some sweetness. Very nice"

Not sure exactly what to make of this wine or when to drink my other bottle. Guess I'll wait. This seemed a little overboard in some way and really nice in other ways. Great with venison sirloin.

Thanks

I like the 1997. But, yeah, the producer is on the modern, bigger style.

Good to know as I wasn't aware. I stayed away from buying much Barbaresco back when because my impression was that much of it was modern. Began buying Cigliuti semi-recently as they were well-regarded.

I had the 1990 recently and it didn't seem modern so maybe they've changed since then. Have you had any other wine from them besides the 1997?

Not super familiar with the producer, I think I've had a nice Langhe Nebbiolo or two. From the wines I've tasted I think they are only a bit modern, some oak but more judicious, but tend to be leaning big and dark. I've seen some people call them traditional, though.

Yes, I wouldn't think they are full-blown modern either. I'll report back as I have a bit of this wine in other vintages but based on the 2005, I might not be rushing to try them either. I think I'll let them age for a while longer.
