Had my first run-in with the Mencia grape a few weeks ago when I tried the fantastic Casar de Burbia. Wonderful fruit, spice, floral/violet component. Aged in American oak, but I didn't get nary a whiff of that nasty dill/Bourbon smell.

Tom,
Have you ever seen a Tazzalenghe in the US at retail?
That was a nice article, and yes there are so many other obscure/lesser known varietals that are out there (for now, at least) to try. I have had Kerner and dry Furmint and loved both. Also my first Schiava this year (from the same region as Lagrein, Trentino).
Some varietals not mentioned but worth a try are Favorita (white, Piedmont), Schioppetino (red, Friuli) and Ribolla Gialla (white, Friuli).
Oh, yeah, and that Basque grape, Txakolina (?) (white). dc.

Dave, I have had Tazzelenghe that I've bought in this country. Roberto at WineExpo/SantaMonica often has some. Also got one at BoulderWineMerchant. Have had several from Dorigo and one from Jacuss. The name "toungue ripper" is appropriate. Big tannic beasts. You mention a lot of my favorite grapes. Particularly excited by Schiopettino, Teroledego, Freisa, Marzeminno, Brachetto...lots of interesting stuff. Tom

I will keep a lookout for the "tongue cutter". :~)
Way back in the day Giacomo Conterno made a dry, ageable Freisa which was quite good. You would have loved it - I wonder if you ever tried it, and whether they still make it?
Pecorino (white, Umbria) is also quite interesting. dc
