Brocard is a decent producer, making good wines at relatively affordable prices. If you have Raveneau and Dauvissat at the top, Fevre and some others in the next tier, than for me Brocard would be below that, though I've seen some recent discussions among knowledgeable folk that suggest they have maybe moved up a notch. I bought and drank their winesfrom 02 and 04 vintages, and while serviceable, they never struck a chord for me. Here's some text from their web site:
"Domaine Ste Claire, he built an ultra modern winery where he works side by side with is his son Julien and his girl Celine. Lately Jean Marc have been able to purchase some premier cru land as well, mainly in Beauregard, Montmains and Vaucoupin. Nevertheless grand cru lots is still as hard to get over as ever before. But with good relations with the growers Brocard are able to buy grapes and make grand cru wines as well.
Julien has been working with his fatherfor over 14 years, and it is easy to see that they are a tight team and share the same ideas in all main concerns of the winemaking. Now they have become four in the team since Jean Marcs son in law Fréderic Gueguen started to work with them, 6 years ago. As a result of this they now focus more and more on ecological winemaking, even though they have always tried to work as close to nature as possible. In some lots they are now even using biodynamical methods.
Furthermore the winemaking is carried out in fully respect of the chablis traditions with stainless steel, definitely no oak, but with the use of modern methods with computerized vinifications. Brocard was one of the first to find out the advantag with machine harvesting in order to get the grapes into the winery as quick and fresh as possible. The rich mineral and limestone soils called kimmeridgien with its fossile layers of oyster is very famous within the grand cru areas, but the consistens of the jura-period soil types are of course in the ground throughout a wider area.
