I just finished "the Wild Vine" by Todd Kliman and it is a fascinating read. It details the development and history of the Norton grape (unknown varietal to me) from it's establishment in Virginia to its migration to Missouri to being destroyed by prohibition, and now Resurrection.

Highly recommended for wino's and history buffs alike

For a pretty decent (or used to be) representative of the variety, give Horton Norton (Virginia) a try.

Harumph....Fred. I have followed DennisHorton's wnry.... from the very start...because he put in Syrah & Viognier. And I tried his Horton Norton as well. I could never drink this wine w/o thinking of DrSeuss's Horton Hatches The Egg....."I said what I meant and I meant what I said...an elephant's faithful 100% per cent"....words I've lived my entire life. Thank you, Horton.

Horton Hatches The Egg was written in the early '40's (by crackey) and it was one of my favorite books when I was growing up (clearly an ongoing process to this very day) and it was read to me many times by my Mom & Dad. Horton Hears a Who came along a lot later. I used to read it to my kids, but I didn't think it had the life-formative messages in it that Egg did...it was just cheap entertainment.

I was thinking more about the Norton grape than Horton Winery...even I couldn't picture you and Tom Jefferson debating the merits of this upstart.
