Welcome back, Jim!

Unfortunately I haven't any any Brunello for 20+ years and not much before that. Maybe someone else can chime in. Dave?

Ciao Jim!

Yes, I am still here. Below is a mailing I just did for my store about some Brunellos that may be of interest to you.

2012 Brunellos are Amazing

Greetings to all the ABC Liquors Wine Club members. Here at ABC we have recently received a number of world class Brunello di Montalcino wines with very high scores from the critics, and I would like to tell you about them.

Brunello is the name of the clone of the Sangiovese grape used to make this wine (100% by law) and means in Italian “the little brown one” due to the slight brown color of the grapes. Montalcino is the name of the hilltop town in southern Tuscany around which the vineyards are situated. It is a beautiful town with an old fortress on the hilltop which contains an “enoteca” where you can taste and buy all the wines made in the area. Brunello is considered not just one of the best Italian reds, but one of the best red wines in the whole world. It is very complex and can age for many years, up to 30 or more in the greatest vintages. It is a special occasion wine, and thus can be quite expensive, but is usually worth every penny. The 2012 vintage was especially excellent. Here is the line-up.

2012 Altesino, Brunello. 96 points from the Wine Spectator. At $54.99 a real value for great Brunello, and from one of my favorite producers. The critic found “cherry, leather and iron notes” and calls it a “suave, elegant red”.

2012 Altesino, Brunello “Montosoli”. 95 points from the Wine Advocate (Parker). A single vineyard Brunello from the great Montosoli vineyard. $94.99 and ideally it should be aged for another 5-25 years, but is tasting good right now (decant for at least three hours). The taster found it “beautifully crafted”, “layered and nuanced” with “dark cherry and blackberry”. My tasting impression: “Awesome”.

2012 Il Marroneto, Brunello. 96 points from the Wine Advocate. $69.99. The taster discovered “wild berry, licorice and cola” and says it has a “spicy and fresh finish”.

2012 Argiano, Brunello. 94 points from the Wine Advocate. $58.99. Another fine producer, the critic found “dark cherry, moist earth, tobacco and grilled herbs” in this gorgeous wine.

2011 was also an excellent vintage and we still have some bottles of the 2011 Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona, Brunello for $54.99. 93 Wine Advocate points. “Dark cherry, dried strawberry, raspberry and plum” were discovered in this wine by the taster. Ciacci is another old favorite of mine.

I need to mention two other “cousins” to Brunello that have just arrived in our store. The 2012 Carpineto, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is made from another Sangiovese clone called the “Prugnolo Gentile” (the “gentle prune”) around the town of Montepulciano, about 10 miles east of Montalcino. 93 Wine Spectator points and $28.99. The taster found “black cherry, tobacco and leather”.

The 2013 Dievole, Chianti Classico Riserva “Novecento” is also primarily Sangiovese, received 93 points from the Wine Spectator, and at $34.99 represents true excellence in Chianti Classico. “Black cherry, plum, leather, spice and tobacco” waft from the glass according to the taster.

Needless to say, these world class Tuscan reds are fabulous and well worth splurging on.

Best regards,

Dave Cuneo
