Cantina SanRocco s.p.a. Barolo 1974 (Vigliano d' Asti)

I bought this wine thinking it might be from the Serralunga vineyard, San Rocco. After all, how many San Rocco's could there be? Apparently more than one! I wouldn't have bought this wine if there had been a picture available because I would have been able to see the address. Another producer from outside the zone. No doubt they were forced by regulations to stop producing Barolo outside the zone. This winery is still around today making Spumanti and other wines. It is north of the Barolo district between Alba and Asti. The countryside there looks pretty.

Base neck fill, stained label. The cork came out in one piece. Decanted one hour.

"Heavy tea/rose nose, even from a distance. Acidic and precise. I quickly guessed it was from La Morra. Intense palate with walnuts. Vigorous and fresh. Excellent, serious juice. Poignant nose. Assertive, fresh and acidic with tobacco and menthol. Gets bolder! Excellent, well balanced wine and very striking. Plum/rose nose - ripe. Oxidiative notes. Autumn leaves in the nose, caramel in the palate. Great La Morra wine. Unbelievable that this is from a relatively unknown maker. Perhaps over the hill. Over-ripe flavors. Gets a little pruney and oxidized at the end."

Fantastic intensely flavored wine without a lot of structure but wasn't mellow at all. Definitely went downhill after an hour of drinking or so. Highly recommended. With stuffed, boneless quail. The food went really well with the wine. $11 for the quail. I love having great dinners at home for cheap!

Thanks
