Boyce, Charlie, and their better haves joined us for dinner last night.

Started off with a great Champagne (didn't catch the name, Charlie?). Much to my liking it showed some fruit and a hint of yeast on the back end.

For dinner we had the 2001 Monte Bello and 2005 Saxum Bone Rock.

The Monte Bello had aromas of aged Bordeaux and the palate had ample fruit, some tannins and was well balanced. As the night wore on I kept getting some menthol. It was agreed this wine could go another few years with no decline. Blind, I would have pegged this for a Santa Cruz Mtn. wine. As an aside, I sampled this and 1999 (Coravin) and the 1999 need several more years at least.

We also had the Saxum which we decanted and showed red fruits and great balance. This too could go a few more years.

Both wines paired well with the short ribs and tough to pick a favorite.

With dessert we opened the 2001 Sigalas Rabaud Sauternes. Boyce first noticed lemon oil on the nose which evolved into apricot. The wine was not overly sweet and barely showing age, again with good balance. Also could have aged a few more years with no downside.

Note: This is the third time I've sample the 99 Monte Bello since 2005 or so and I probably will wait another 3-5 years to do so again. IMHO, this is the best use of a Coravin.

The champagne was the NV A. R. Lenoble Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Mag 14. Agree with your notes on the Monte Bello and the Saxum. I think we all picked up an apricot note on the Sauternes which was lovely. Great food, great wines and great company.
