Fontanafredda Barolo Vigna Lazzarito 1971
13.5%
My first Lazzarito and hopefully not the last.
"Excellent - detailed, poignant. Expansive. Finely detailed nose. Exquisite nose. Sweet. Complex nose. Nice fruit left. Very unami. Finely detailed. Xmas nose. Sweet and warmish. Muddy though stood up. Fruit, easy drinking. Intense, concentrated and rich"
This and the recent Ciabot Mentin Ginestra both reminded me of Cannubi. I think I am beginning to see what the top vineyards of barolo have in common.
Lazzarito is a historical barolo vineyard in Serralunga and highly regarded. Fontanafredda had 2.63 HA and this was bottle number 1379. This didn't really speak of Serralunga so much as just a top Barolo.
I was very pleased by this as I had low expectations. High percentage of bad corks and bad wine reported. The neck shape was suspect. However this was a direct import from Italy recently and the cork was in fine shape. Also, I have had Fontanafredda barolos (Bianco and Gattinera) from the 1970's and they were good not great. This is the best 1971 I've had to date from anyone.
Excellent with hawaiian venison steaks, porcini risotto and prosciutto wrapped mushrooms with marsala and fava beans.
Thanks
