The second partner of Gruner has been discovered. At least from what I remember. There was a 200+ year old vine discovered in an abandoned field in Austria. When the genetic material was studied it was discovered to be the second parent to Gruner. Maybe just read the wiki article, reference's Jancis Robinson's 2012 "Wine Grapes…" etc.
