G. D. Vajra Langhe Rosso 2012 (Piedmont red blend)

13.5% Imported by Unique Wine Co, WA

I really liked this. I've never had much luck with this category although I'm sure there are good ones out there. The price ($12 discounted) certainly influenced how much I liked it. This wine just had so much better fruit in it than other wines I've tried from this category. So it really stood out in that respect. It was traditionally styled.

This was acidic and bright with depth, concentration and very delineated/precise edges. It sometimes reverted to softness but was not a ripe wine. It had several very nice flavors that came and went. There was some very nice Nebbiolo fruit in there but I'm not sure what else was added. It was obviously much better with food although can be drunk on its own if you like this kind of thing. I've had quite a number of Piedmont DOCG wines that weren't this good. I'm not saying it's a Barbaresco or something but it certainly out performed some of the underachievers in DOCG-land.
