Stuff from the alt-BloodyPulpit:
1. SauvBlanc: I do this DCV comparison every yr when they send me the VSP shipment. Almost always, I prefer the
Musque version of their SB because of its more powerful aromatics. This yr, I preferred the DCV3 version
because it was more interesting than the Musque.
2. Matthiasson: Steve's first LL Zin was the '14. Which I also liked quite a lot. It's a Zin on the leaner/spare side
but just avoids comining off as an underripe/eviscerated Zin. Quite different from other LL Zins. This is how
they would make Zin in Friuli if they could.
3. Lemorel: EricSussman took over the farming (from BradAlpert) a few yrs ago of the very old vonWeidlich vnyd there
on LemorelLane just off HarrisonGradeRd. He had previously called this the vonWeidlich Zin, and then the Robert's
Block Zin (after Robert vonWeidlich). Ottomino used to take these grapes. They were also the source of the old
Ridge Occidental Zins back in the '70's. Very cold place to be growing Zin.
4. DryCreekVnyds: I think DCV is making some of the best Zins around. Very classic DryCreekVlly Zin w/ loads of bright
raspberry character. They remind me a lot of the old Nalle Zins (which I haven't had much of of late), but w/ not
the Fr.oak that those showed.
5. WindGap: This is, of course, the "new" PaxMahle. I have, of course, followed Pax from the very start. When this
brash young man breathlessly approached me at VillaCreek and wanted me to try his Ho-Made Syrah. It was a big/huge
Syrah that portended the things he would do w/ JoeDonelan under the Pax label. As he has reined in his winemaking
style, I find his wines are a whole lot more interesting. Though all Pax's wines are quite good, I find his Syrahs
particularly to my taste.
