Guigal Crozes-Hermitage Rhone 2011

After this ran dry suspiciously quickly, we pulled an Ampelos Gamma Syrah for comparison (See post on 3 Ampelos Gamma). It seemed like the right thing to do ... in the name of science and all. “Primary” would be the word at this time to describe this wine. Cranberry colored, scented, and flavored with a tightness reflecting its youth. Brined black olives, iodine, some blackberry wash across the palate. Nothing about the fruit is “bright” and, while pleasing, never quite comes into sharp focus. The finish of anise, smoke and licorice complete the package. This needs more time if it is to come within a shadow of being as good as the ‘09. Only slight sediment at this point. 13% alc. 01.12.18. With assorted cheeses and crusty bread. Recommended.
